Canal bridge of the Apulian Aqueduct | Park Gates
Secret passage between Lucania and Apulia
At the time of the Bourbons, this locality was known as the “Locazione di Salzola” along the tratturi (sheep tracks) Cerignola-Melfi and Foggia-Ascoli-Lavello. Not far from the bridge, the hill of Montemaggiore was the scenario of an important medieval battle thanks to which the Normans defeated the Byzantines, conquering the South of Italy.
The bridge, on the border between Apulia and Basilicata, is a sort of secret passage, however well known by the pilgrims of Lavello who every year on the last April’s Friday walk to the sanctuary of the Incoronata in Foggia.
